Engagement - Students were given ownership of creating their own group name, lessons and inquiry around statistics.
Paper planes
L.G. conduct investigations using the statistical Inquiry.
S.O.S.
- Measure accurately using metres, centimetres and millimetres.
- Scatter plot graphs.
- Record data in tables.
We have to change a variable on the paper plane, here are some variables wingspan, length, width and weight. We have to measure the distance flown and the wingspan with metres, centimetres and millimetres, a metre is 100 centimetres centimetres are 10 millimetres and then we have to record it on a table and then a dot plot graphs.
My prediction: The smaller the wingspan the further it will fly.
Why i thought this: because I usually make my planes with a smaller wingspan and it flys far.
My furthest plane flew 7.85 metres because it was the biggest wingspan.
My least furthest plane flew 2.12 metres because it had the smallest wingspan
My prediction didn’t match my result because the plane with the biggest wingspan flew the furthest.
Rich Tasks - Rich tasks allowed the students to:
- step into them even when the route to a solution is unclear, getting started and exploring is made accessible to pupils of wide ranging abilities
- pose as well as solve problems, make conjectures
- work at a range of levels
- extend knowledge or apply knowledge in new contexts
- allow for different methods
- have opportunities to broaden their problem-solving skills
- deepen and broaden mathematical content knowledge
- have potential to reveal underlying principles or make connections between areas of mathematics
- include intriguing contexts
- have opportunities to observe other people being mathematical or see the role of mathematics within cultural settings
- Students are able to justify their choices of action and explain their thinking
Spray and Walk Away (effective questioning) - Physically leaving the kids to problem solve without you there, leaving them to work through a problem and become the teachers of others and decide which strategies to use without us intervening.
Environment - a warm welcoming environment that accelerates, challenges, extends and promotes collaboration and success. Viewing failure as a stepping stone to success.
